Fall Ombre Chocolate Cake

Fall is hands down my favorite season. The change of temperature, clothes, and best of all the leaves! I made this cake inspired by the fall leaves I miss seeing on the east coast. The only two things we lack in California are water and seasons. There are no seasons here Southern California, the lowest it goes down to the high 40’s. Which is nice sometimes but after awhile it gets a little boring.  dsc_0018

Chocolate Cake (Hershey’s Perfectly Chocolate Cake Recipe)


  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1-3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup HERSHEY’S Cocoa
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water


  1.  Heat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour two 9-inch round baking pans.
  2. Stir together sugar, flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt in large bowl.
  3. Add eggs, milk, oil and vanilla; beat on medium speed of mixer 2 minutes.
  4. Stir in boiling water (batter will be thin).
  5. Pour batter into prepared pans.
  6. Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until inserted toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Cool 10 minutes; remove from pans to wire racks. Cool completely.


Vanilla Ombre Buttercream

Ingredients: *double recipe, your going to use a lot of frosting*

  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 soften butter stick
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • Red, black, and yellow food coloring


  1. Beat the vanilla, salt, and soften butter for 3 minutes; until fluffy
  2. Add powdered sugar and milk interchangeably; 1 part milk 2 parts powdered sugar
  3. Mix until combined until soft with semi- stiff peaks
  4. Set aside 1 cup of frosting  in a piping bag for each food coloring
  5. For red frosting, add 3 drops red and 1 drop black food coloring
  6. For orange frosting, add 5 drops red and 4 drops food coloring
  7. For yellow frosting, add   5 drops yellow food coloring
  8. After the cake has been crumb coated, pipe out the frosting in the order of yellow, orange and then red.
  9. Smooth the frosting over with a icing spatula
  10. Serve & Enjoy!
